Introduction

Community Food Security: "A situation in which all community residents obtain a safe, culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate diet through a sustainable food system that maximizes self-reliance and social justice." (Hamm MW and Bellows AC. J.Nutr Educ Behav 2003;35:37-43.)

Welcome to FoodNet, the website of the Food Security Workgroup at the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA). This electronic network links organizations involved in food security in Ontario and allows members to share information about food security programs, policy and research initiatives, community action and advocacy efforts. It is a way for people involved in food security to communicate and work more collaboratively with one another.

In 2002, the OPHA adopted "A Systemic Approach to Community Food Security: A Role for Public Health", a position paper produced by the Food Security Workgroup. This paper supersedes "Food for Now and the Future", a discussion paper produced by the group in 1995, and the associated Agenda for Action, developed in 1997.

In addition to the resources and information posted on the FoodNet website, we also provide an electronic mailing list, where members can post information relating to Food Security issues.

Objectives for the FoodNet website:

  1. Showcase what is currently happening in Community Food Security (CFS) in public health units and related community organizations/networks/councils,

  2. Provide a foundation for recognition and legitimization of CFS in public health, including Provincial Mandatory Program Guidelines,

  3. Serve as a learning tool for CFS programs, including guidance on forming community partnerships, and

  4. Encourage a diverse group of public health disciplines to see their work as relevant to CFS.
