Injury Prevention Initiative (IPI)
The Injury Prevention Initiative at OPHA has several exciting projects on the go for 2007–2008, including:
Initiating and implementing a Public Health Network of Health Unit Management Staff with the role of prioritizing injury prevention activities in Ontario and participating as a network to share and analyze injury prevention information collectively.
Assisting the OPHA Violence Prevention Workgroup in their planned activities including the facilitation of a Town Hall meeting on Violence Prevention at the CPHA conference.
Overseeing the deliverables of the Ontario Injury Prevention Resource Centre which helps injury prevention practitioners and their community partners as they work to reduce the incidence and impact of injury in Ontario. Key outcomes thus far in this fiscal year include:
- The release of the comprehensive report Injuries among Seniors in Ontario: A Descriptive Analysis of Emergency Department and Hospitalization Data [PDF]. This report presents a lot of information in a clear, concise manner, including the fact that seniors account for 40% of injury hospitalizations in Ontario, which amounts to almost 31,000 injury hospitalizations. Falls were by far the most common type of injury for seniors, followed by transport incidents.
- The Ontario Injury Prevention Conference which was held in June 2007 in Thunder Bay attracting 130 delegates.
- Some of the more regular resources which have focused on injury prevention priority areas, with some being the focus of media attention. These resources include the Ontario Stakeholder News [PDF] and the Ontario Injury Compass, with the month of June focusing on Soccer Injuries.
The Ontario Injury Prevention Resource Centre is advised by a 16 member committee. To view many more resources on injury prevention, visit their website.
As previously announced, the Injury Prevention Initiative is now managed by Ben Rempel. Ben has been employed with OPHA since 2003, working with the Alcohol Policy Network and the Association to Reduce Alcohol Promotion in Ontario projects. He will continue his work on these projects while managing the Injury Prevention Initiative. Khalilah Bruzual is the part-time assistant to this project and comes to the project with years of administrative and coordinating experience with nearly three years at OPHA.
