A Sad Farewell to OPHA's Summer Students
With summers end comes the time to say good bye and thank you to our summer Placement students. This year, OPHA was lucky to have three stellar women join our ranks for the summer.
Celina Degano, a Masters of Public Health student from the University of Saskatchewan, completed her placement in August with the Alcohol Policy Network. Her three month stay focused on completing an environmental scan and literature review of "Youth and Alcohol Trends" for an upcoming research paper; researching, formatting and delivering a presentation on the importance of alcohol policies in communities; and helped update key components of our website.
Danica Rush, who worked with the Heart Health Resource Centre and the Ontario Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance over the summer, has returned to her nursing studies at Ryerson University. Danica examined the three-year plans of the Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) for their activities in health promotion and chronic disease prevention. As well, she interviewed over half of the public health units to explore their involvement with LHINs. This information will be useful in fostering collaboration between Public Health and LHINs.
Leigh Underhill, a MHSc Community Nutrition student from the University of Toronto, completed her placement in early summer with the Nutrition Resource Centre. Her time focused on completing an environmental scan of point-of-purchase promotions in school, workplace, and restaurant settings in order to facilitate the development of such promotional materials for the Eat Smart! Program. She also used her creative talents for the revision of an education program on the new Canada's Food Guide for the Community Food Advisor Program. Leigh is now on a three-month placement with Dairy Farmers of Canada (Ontario).
Thanks to all three for doing a great job and brightening up our office.
