News from the Public Health Alliance on LGBTT2IQQ Equity

The Public Health Alliance was formed in 2000 to advocate, create partnerships, ensure the implementation of recommendations and develop other appropriate and relevant initiatives to form a world where sexual orientations and gender diversities are not merely tolerated but appreciated and celebrated. Over the course the years several position papers have been developed regarding gay men, bisexuals, and transgender persons.

This past year has been particularly busy for this workgroup. We distributed a copy of the positive space training manual, A Positive Space is a Healthy Place, that we developed in 2006, to each Public Health unit (PHU) and Community Health Center (CHC) in Ontario. The annual workshop that we provide was offered to the Thunder Bay District Health unit in 2007 and with their help, positive space training was provided to not only staff of the health unit but also their school board. Members of our group also presented our work at the 19th World Conference of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education in Vancouver, BC in June 2007, at the annual meeting of the Canadian Public Health Association in Ottawa, and at the Guelph sexuality conference as a workshop session.

This year our plans are to again offer a conference in Waterloo in March [PDF] to educate on positive space. We have also been accepted to present at the Guelph Sexuality conference as a half-day session. We continue to offer support and assistance to health units and CHCs and will be providing positive space training at several health units this year.

Please feel free to contact us if we can be of help to you or if you are interested in joining our workgroup.
