ANDSOOHA: Exciting New Developments in Public Health Nursing Management

ANDSOOHA-Public Health Nursing Management strives to promote excellence in Public Health Nursing Administration and Practice and to provide a united voice for Public Health Nursing Administration in Ontario. Over the past 6 months, ANDSOOHA has been very active in a number of key areas:

  • Our fall AGM/Workshop was very successful. The workshop was facilitated by Gerry Smith, Vice-President of Organizational Health and Training at Warren-Shepell. Gary provides an excellent overview of some of the more challenging trends for People Leaders in today’s workplace.

The AGM provided an opportunity for a release of the Ontario Nursing Strategy: Preceptorship/Mentorship Initiative evaluation. This project is an ANDSOOHA/PHRED partnership and the evaluation was designed to evaluate the use of the Nursing Mentorship Resource Guide (NMRG) in four pilot sites and resulted in key recommendations that will support ongoing use of the NMRG in other health units. The Guide is available on the ANDSOOHA website.

  • Involvement in the New Nursing Graduate Task Force and support for the Nursing Graduate Strategy which supports the transition of new nursing graduates into full time work.

  • Consultation on the design of the first public health nursing sector survey undertaken by the Nursing Secretariat. The response from pubic health units was excellent for this initial survey and ongoing work is happening to ensure that data relevant to public health units is effectively captured.

  • We have recently received notification that our HealthForceOntario Nursing Human Resources Planning proposal was accepted for funding. The focus of our project will be the development of an Public Health Nursing orientation guide.

There are currently ten Constituent Societies of OPHA. Their representatives sit on the OPHA Board of Directors, and are elected by their respective societies.
