Heart Health Resource Centre

The past year was a busy year for the Heart Health Resource Centre (HHRC) and 2008 is shaping up to be equally full of activity.

In 2007, the Ministry of Health Promotion confirmed one year transition funding for the Ontario Heart Health Program (OHHP) until December 2008. The Ministry used the remainder of 2007 to systematically review the OHHP with the intent of providing more detailed and longer-term funding announcements in the spring of 2008.

Community Supports: In preparation for the funding announcements from the Ministry, the heart heath communities have been undergoing planning sessions to consider strategic local directions and the slate of programs. The HHRC is supporting the efforts of the communities during this transition phase by providing 22 on-site full/half day onsite consultations. These sessions are generally further supported through HHRC Coaching for the heart health coordinator. As well as consultations, the HHRC has produced a number of resources specifically designed for this transition phase.

The recent, well-attended HHRC Symposium addressing Social Determinants of Health further provided ideas for the OHHP communities as they considered their post 2008 set of programs. The newly created @-a-glace publications provide concise information about topics of interest such as program planning, evaluation, strategic planning etc. The HHRC has also referred OHHP communities to the wealth of products produced by the other resources centres of the Ontario Health Promotion Resource System (OHPRS).

A new set of community supports being offered by the HHRC revolve around French Language Services (FLS). The HHRC was pleased to offer a Networking opportunity to francophone coordinators in November 2007, and is planning to offer a second opportunity in the Spring of 2008. In partnership with other resource centres, the HHRC is planning an FLS workshop addressing obesity for the late spring.

Partnership Initiatives: the HHRC continues to work on a number of partnership initiatives with other members of the OHPRS, such as the OHPRS system-wide approach to obesity. In addition, we are invited to participate on provincial advisory committees, such as the Ontario Stroke System – Health Promotion and Primary Prevention Committee, as well as on national advisory committees such as the Canadian Public Health Association Chronic Disease Management and Prevention Committee.
