Exploring New Frontiers in Epidemiology
Epidemiologists are getting ready to explore the built environment and meet the requirements of The New Ontario Public Health Standards
by Alanna Leffley, Constituent Society Representative, OPHA Board of Directors
Over the past decade, The Association of Public Health Epidemiologists in Ontario (APHEO) has worked hard to provide those working in public health with good quality, standard definitions and methods for calculating health and chronic disease risk factor indicators. With a grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada, work is continuing to update the chronic disease core indicators. The introduction of the new Ontario Public Health Standards brings with it the need for a number of new indicators and APHEO will endeavour to address these. Work will begin shortly on addressing "The built environment".
Upcoming Conference
APHEO and the Canadian Society for Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CSEB) are holding a joint conference, Expanding Horizons in Epidemiology: From Research to Practice, on May 25-29, 2009 in Ottawa. Topic areas to be explored at this conference include: knowledge transfer and policy, cancer (future opportunities for epidemiology and prevention), infectious disease, impact of the social and built environment on health, and biostatistics. We look forward to seeing you there.
