Introducing Two Resources for School Communities

To help encourage healthy eating in schools, as of September 2011 all schools will be required to meet new nutrition standards for food and beverages offered for sale in schools, including cafeterias and vending machines.

The Nutrition Resource Centre is pleased to announce the availability of two new resources that build awareness and support school communities with implementation of Ontario’s School Food and Beverage Policy (P/PM 150).

Bake It Up! Tasty treats for healthier school bake sales and the French translation, Mettez la main à la pâte! Idées pour les ventes de pâtisseries santé includes over 20 recipes for healthier baked goods and snacks that comply with the “Sell Most” nutrition criteria for Baked Goods or Grain-Based Snacks. It can be used by parents, students, school councils, community volunteers and school staff for making baked goods to be sold in schools. Bake It Up! can also be promoted to staff, students and parents who wish to make healthier baked goods for school events or classroom celebrations, or to enjoy at home.

The At-A-Glance Guide to Ontario’s School Food and Beverage Policy and the French translation, Renseignements généraux sur la Politique concernant les aliments et les boissons dans les écoles de l’Ontario, is a six-page guide that provides an overview of Ontario’s School Food and Beverage Policy. The intended audiences are parents, and students in intermediate and secondary levels.

These resources can be downloaded from the NRC’s website: click on “NRC Resources” and then “English Resources” or “French Resources.” They are also accessible from the EatRight Ontario website.
