OPHA Conference 2008—Making Healthy Communities Count

The preliminary program overview for the Niagara Public Health Summit, this year's joint conference among OPHA, alPHa, and the Niagara Region Public Health, is now available. The full program will be available the first week in August. Online registration will begin early August, and the Early Bird Deadline is September 12th. For more information, stay tuned to the conference website.

Obesity Strategy

OPHA continues to work with the Ministry of Health Promotion on its childhood obesity strategy. Indications are that the focus will be on after school programming with an emphasis on active living and healthy eating.

Advocacy Positions

Since the June e-bulletin, OPHA has taken positions on several important issues in public health. View a synopsis of our recent advocacy communications and the positions we have taken on the issues.

Financial Statements

The Board of Directors held a Board meeting on June 26 & 27. The draft Audited Financial Statement, 2007-08 was presented by Steve Schwets and Laurie Andrews of Gilmore and Company. The Statement with minor corrections, was approved by the Board to go forward to the membership at the AGM.

Staff Update

Christine Herrera will be rejoining the OPHA team! Towards Evidence Informed Practice (TEIP) program welcomes Christine Herrera as its new Program Co-ordinator. Christine started her career at OPHA as an intern with the Heart Health Resource Centre (HHRC) earlier this year. She will begin her new role in September 2008.

OPHA Celebrates 60 Years of Public Health Advocacy — 2009

The majority of Constituent Societies are coming together to jointly deliver the 2009 "60th Anniversary Diamond" OPHA Conference; the first planning meeting will be held on August 1.
