Community Health Nurses' Initiatives Group

The Community Health Nurses' Initiatives Group (CHNIG), an interest group of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, works to influence the health care system and health and social policies in areas affecting the work of community health nurses and the public we serve. CHNIG also represents Ontario on the Community Health Nurses Association of Canada, an affiliate group of the Canadian Nurses’ Association.

As a Constituent Society of OPHA, CHNIG has contributed to several OPHA initiatives over the last several months including:

  • OPHA's response to the draft protocols for the Ontario Public Health Standards;

  • OPHA's submission to the Ministry of Education's Grade 1 to 12 Health & Phys. Ed. Curriculum Review with emphasis on promoting mental health and well-being;

  • OPHA's recommendations for a Childhood Obesity Strategy for the Ministry of Health Promotion;

  • OPHA's funding submission related to the public health core competencies;

  • OPHA's position paper titled A Discussion Paper on Public Health, Local Health Integration Networks, and Regional Health Authorities.

In addition, CHNIG is working in partnership:

  • With Algoma Health Unit and ANDSOOHA on the advisory committee for the MOHLTC funded project "Orientation: Transition to Public Health Nursing" to develop an orientation to nurses new to public health;

  • To develop a national position paper on the vision of community health nursing for 2020 with Community Health Nurses Association of Canada in collaboration with the Canadian Nurses Association and MacMaster University;

  • To create a Public Health Nursing Centre of Excellence;

  • With Community Health Nurses Association of Canada in offering the 2nd annual Community Health Nurses conference titled "Shaping the Future: Practice, Power, Politics" in Toronto which took place on May 29 to 31, 2008;

  • To lobby federal Minister of Health Tony Clement to save the Canadian Health Network.

The Community Health Nurses Initiatives Group looks forward to our continued collaboration in advocating for public heath and the public we serve together.

There are currently 11 Constituent Societies of OPHA. Their representatives sit on the OPHA Board of Directors, and are elected by their respective societies.
