Funding for the Canadian Partnership for Children's Health and the Environment (CPCHE) and Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA) Promotes Ongoing Advocacy on Children's Health Agenda

The Canadian Partnership for Children's Health and Environment (CPCHE) is a collaborative partnership of eleven groups that are working together across traditional boundaries to protect children's health from environmental contaminants. The partnership aims to: move children's environmental health issues into the minds of decision-makers both on the front lines and at the policy level; promote children's environmental health amongst caregivers and the public; and, coordinate activities and create efficiencies amongst the partners.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation has recently approved funding for CPCHE's "Building Local Children's Environmental Health Champions" project, with the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA) as the project lead. OPHA has been a leader in children's environmental health issues through its environmental health committee and children's health committee and this project is a natural extension of their existing work.

"Building Local Children’s Environmental Health Champions" will enable OPHA and CPCHE partners to build the capacity of local thought leaders currently working in service provider organizations to deliver high quality children's environmental health programming in their communities. The goal is to create a network of champions throughout the province who can advance the cause of children's environmental health in their local communities. OPHA is pleased to announce that Beth Anne Currie has been hired as a consultant to implement this project.

In addition to the Local Champions project, this grant will also enable OPHA and CPCHE to work with public health inspectors (PHIs) to bring a child health and environment lens — namely the prevention of exposure to environmental contaminants and other hazards — to the daily work of PHIs in the child care and school settings.
