July 2011 - Announcements
Planning for The Ontario Public Health Convention 2012 (TOPHC) is well underway. TOPHC 2012 is being hosted by the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA), the Association of Local Public Health Agencies (alPHa) and Public Health Ontario (PHO)*. As per last year, the convention aims to advance public health in Ontario by increasing the level of both knowledge and skills in the workforce.
We are pleased to announce that the call for abstract submissions is now open.
TOPHC 2012 will take place in Spring 2012, and will include an exciting mix of plenary sessions, presentations to share new knowledge, panel discussions, and educational workshops that build and refine practical skills. As per last year, the focus is on the application to public health and building of practical skills.
Submission process: Please submit your proposal online at www.tophc.ca/Pages/Call-for-Abstracts.aspx
Theme: The theme is “Staying Ahead of the Curve”. In order to give more direction, the TOPHC Program Committee has created more detailed goals and objectives: The goals and objectives for the convention are provided on the official TOPHC 2012 website at www.tophc.ca. We recommend you review the goals and objectives before submitting a proposal.

Review process: A review process will be completed in late October 2011.
The deadline for submission of a research abstract or workshop proposal for The Ontario Public Health Convention 2012 (TOPHC) is 5 p.m. on September 30, 2011. We hope this longer time period for making a submission will contribute to you creating a great one.

Health Nexus in partnership with 3M Canada is launching a new national award.
The 3M Health Leadership Award will recognize an outstanding community leader that has had an impact on the health of their community by addressing at least one of the social determinants of health. In its inaugural year, this award will celebrate those who have enhanced their community through dedicated contribution and inspiring change.
The award will recognize an individual from the non-profit sector who works outside of the formal health care field. Preference will be given to those who have not been previously recognized or celebrated on a national level.
In addition to perhaps having someone you’d like to nominate, we’re hoping you can forward on this information to those whom you think would be interested in learning about the new award and the upcoming symposium on community leadership.
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” - John Quincy Adams
