OCDPA Publishes Report to Support Movement on the HEAL Strategy

The Ontario Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance's "Moving the Healthy Eating and Active Living Strategy Forward in Ontario" is a consultative report which describes four priorities for action necessary to move Ontario’s Action Plan on Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) forward.

Based on discussions with tobacco field experts on the success behind the Smoke Free Ontario Strategy and building on the knowledge from key informants within the areas of healthy eating, physical activity, health promotion and chronic disease prevention, this report proposes four priorities for action that, when implemented with appropriate investment and collaborative effort with stakeholders, will move the HEAL strategy forward:

  • Establish a HEAL Expert Panel to recommend a comprehensive agenda for action within a chronic disease prevention and management framework;
  • Establish a HEAL research and policy engagement agenda for Ontario;
  • Develop a comprehensive HEAL knowledge exchange plan for Provincial and Regional Stakeholders;
  • Develop a plan to build regional capacity to implement effective HEAL programs and policies.

This report builds on OCDPA's Thinking Like A System: the way forward to prevent chronic disease in Ontario, and offers a clear and concise blueprint on how to implement the four priorities for action. These priorities are applicable beyond the HEAL strategy and are transferable to the development of other healthy public policy, including Ontario's recent announcement to develop a provincial strategy targeting childhood obesity. The report is intended for Ontario policy makers, educators, non-governmental organization staff, as well as health professionals and practitioners in the areas of healthy eating, active living and chronic disease prevention.
