Farewell to Jane Bellman
We have been extremely fortunate to have Jane Bellman at the helm as Manager of the Nutrition Resource Centre for the past year. She has brought stability to the NRC during a time of expansion and change within the NRC due to the increased focus on Healthy Eating and Active Living. Unfortunately, due to the pressures of a young family, the travel challenges of living in Guelph and working in Toronto and the end of her secondment from the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health, Jane has decided not to continue as Manager of the NRC. We will truly miss her calm collegial nature, strong work ethic, excellent management skills and expertise in nutrition. Jane will continue to work with Cindy Scythes one day/week this fall to facilitate a smooth transition in the management of the NRC. Please join me in wishing Jane the best.
Welcome Cindy Scythes
The Nutrition Resource Centre is very pleased to welcome Cindy Scythes to the position of Manager, Nutrition Resource Centre. Cindy is a Registered Dietitian and has worked as a Public Health Nutritionist for York Region Community and Health Services for the past 16 years. She has a Community Nutrition Masters degree from University of Guelph. Cindy's expertise is in infant and prenatal nutrition, but she also participated on the York Region committee that planned the 2002 OPHA conference and currently sits on a committee developing a Balanced Scorecard for York Region's Public Health Branch.
Many of you will have known Cindy during her time on the Board of Directors and as the current chair of the Governance Task Force (yes, She is the one who insisted on those pesky policies being written!).
Cindy started off as a liaison for OSNPPH on the Board, and held other positions such as Vice President and Member-at-Large over the years.
Cindy lives in Aurora and hopes to create an enchanting garden at her new house. Cindy is excited to be joining the OPHA and NRC staff after working with so many of them in various ways over the past 10 years.
Appreciation: Fifteen Years of Service, Wit, and Smiles …
Kathleen Orth recalls her first days at the OPHA in October 1992 filled with a double-dose of happiness. The thrill of landing her new job was heightened by the celebration of her birthday (complete with cake) at her OPHA welcome party.
Today, fifteen birthdays later, Kathleen brings the same energy and enthusiasm to the Nutrition Resource Centre (NRC) at OPHA.
"Kathleen is very dedicated and committed to her work," says NRC Manager Jane Bellman. "Kathleen's quiet professionalism masks a wicked sense of humor, a quick wit which is deployed with respect and grace."
Over the years Kathleen has contributed her many talents to several of the earlier projects of OPHA — Literacy and Health, Determinants of Health, Injury Prevention are just a few.
She also chaired the committee that organized the Open House Celebration of the OPHA Secretariat's recent 20th Anniversary.
Kathleen provided invaluable assistance to the Manage the Energy Conference (1997) and co-ordinated the publication of the first OPHA Annual Report in 1997.
She managed the publication of key OPHA communication vehicles — HealthBeat and OPHA News — and when OPHA turned 50 in 1999, Kathleen took the lead in creating the 50th Anniversary logo.

Kathleen has served as Program Assistant in the Nutrition Resource Centre since its inception in 2000. As the longest-standing member of the NRC team, her historical perspective and experience is often called upon to orient new team members. Her enthusiasm has been instrumental in helping the team cope with the challenges of change in staffing within an ever-changing environment at OPHA.
"Kathleen continues to bring a stable force to the NRC which results in effective day to day functioning of the team," Ms. Bellman says. "She has played a crucial role in supervising the off-site storage of NRC resources. OPHA has been very fortunate to have such a dedicated employee!"
Congratulations, Kathleen! Here's wishing you many more successful years at OPHA.
