Community Health Nurses' Initiatives Group (CHNIG)

CHNIG launched its inaugural National Community Health Nurses Conference on May 3-5, 2007 in Toronto with 320 community health nurses attending from across Canada. As a result, plans are underway to initiate a national annual community health nursing conference with Community Health Nurses Association of Canada (CHNAC) in 2008.

In June 2007, CHNIG's representative on the CHNAC Board attended the first discipline-specific competencies meeting in Vancouver. CHNAC plans to begin work on the development of discipline-specific competencies for public health nurses.

CHNIG had the opportunity to respond to a number of policy documents including the Canadian Alliance of Community Health Centre Association's preliminary position paper titled: Completing the Vision: The Second Stage of Medicare. In consultation with OPHA, CHNIG provided feedback to the Public Health Provincial Municipal Fiscal and Service Delivery Review and the National Public Health Standards for Accreditation. In addition, CHNIG provided input to the Canadian Nurses' Association draft document on Nurses Ethical Considerations in an Emergency or Pandemic and attended a provincial meeting to develop a collaborative planning approach for Chronic Disease Prevention.

In September 2007, CHNIG and CHNAC received funding from Public Health Agency of Canada to support a qualitative descriptive study in developing priority issues for a national position paper. This paper will focus on a vision of community health nursing in the year 2020.

In conclusion, CHNIG is proud of our new updated website featuring a bulletin board, members section, upcoming events and photo gallery.

There are currently ten Constituent Societies of OPHA. Their representatives sit on the OPHA Board of Directors, and are elected by their respective societies.
