OPHA's Toxic Use Reduction Advocacy Partnership Makes Progress
Late in August the Ministry of the Environment posted on the Environmental Registry its White Paper — Creating Ontario's Toxics Reduction Strategy–a Discussion Paper — on toxic use reduction for comment prior to the preparation for upcoming legislation promised by the McGuinty government. The 45-day comment period ends October 11, 2008.
In preparation for the upcoming legislation and to assist in the shaping and evaluating the government’s plans, a Take Charge on Toxics campaign has been developed by a partnership including the Ontario Division of the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Environmental Law Association, United Steelworkers, The Toronto Cancer Prevention Coalition and OPHA who are committed to supporting the development of an environmental and occupational carcinogen use reduction strategy in Ontario. Download details of this campaign and the set of ten recommendations to be promoted in the process of creating toxic use reduction regulations. This campaign has been directed at the following Ministries:
- Minister of Economic Development and Trade
- Minister of Research and Innovation
- Minister of Health Promotion
- Minister of Health and Long-Term Care
- Minister of Transportation
- David Harvey, Premier's Office
The OPHA Environmental Health Workgroup will be utilizing the ten recommendations in this campaign to respond to the White Paper. OPHA will also be participating in a response through the Environmental and Occupational Carcinogen Stakeholder Group. We hope that you will take the time to also submit a response, tililizing the Take Charge of Toxics campaign recommendations, before the deadline.
