Association Update |
Executive
Monika Turner, Sylvia Sheddon, and Paulina Salamo from the Public Health Division, Public Health Standards Branch attended the OPHA Executive meeting to give an update and enter into a discussion about their plans for performance management and release of the Public Health Standards and Protocols. A report card on public health units is being prepared which will include data that is being collected through a health unit survey and other information about the population that each health unit serves. Plans for a November launch and rollout of the Public of the Public Health Standards, Protocols and support documents are underway. Stay tuned.
Health Force Ontario
OPHA received approval for a $240,000 proposal to develop a performance manage framework for public health based upon public health core competencies. Partners include the OPHA Core Competency Task Group of Public Health Professionals; Toronto Public Health; Thunder Bay District Health Unit; Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit and Hamilton Public Health Services. The one year project includes an environmental scan and collection of existing competency based performance management tools and the development of a core competency based framework that can incorporate a the public health core competencies as well as the competencies which are imposed by the municipalities/regional governments of which health units are part. More information will be shared as the project commences in October.
Staff Update
Staffing of the Heart Health Resource Centre is now up to full complement. Adele Parkinson has been seconded as Program Coordinator for 4.5 months from Region of Waterloo Public Health and Rebecca Byers has been hired as a permanent Program Coordinator. Both began in late August.
Please welcome Maheen Pasha to the Nutrition Resource Centre. Maheen is a student of the Internationally Educated Dietitian Pre-registration Program (IDPP) at Ryerson University and will be completing her practicum with us until October 20, 2008. Maheen is an international dietitian with practice experience in India as well as Saudi Arabia. She is completing the IDPP program to receive her Canadian credentials. Welcome Maheen!
TEIP is delighted to introduce Christine Herrera who begins her role as TEIP Program Coordinator on September 15th. Christine is a recent graduate of the U Waterloo MHP program. In addition to her studies she also worked as a teaching assistant and research assistant under Barb Riley and took on many volunteer projects as the Student Services Liaison. Christine spent two weeks at TEIP as a Masters Placement Student where she impressed everyone with her intelligence, creativity, productivity, and personality. Welcome aboard Christine!
