Breastfeeding Promotion

Breastfeeding Modules for integration into Undergraduate Health Professional Curricula

The Breastfeeding Promotion Workgroup has developed a series of modules covering essential information regarding breastfeeding that it believes should be incorporated into the undergraduate curricula of all health care professionals who work with childbearing families.

Incorporation of this material into curricula will facilitate the promotion of breastfeeding as well as the education of professionals who are knowledgeable and skilled regarding breastfeeding, and who give evidence-based, accurate, and consistent information regarding breastfeeding to future childbearing families. It is important to recognize that this is basic information for all students in the health professions. Some students, eg. medicine and nursing, will require additional information supplemented by hands on experience with breastfeeding.

This model curriculum may also be useful for staff professional development in agencies and/or organizations involved in the promotion and support of breastfeeding.
