Built Environment
Many Public Health units and other agencies across Ontario are focussing on the built environment and its relationship to human health. The recently created OPHA workgroup on Health and the Built Environment will spend its first year working with the different stakeholders to help establish common understanding of the issues and to develop an agenda for action.
The impacts of the built environment on our health are complex, involving several determinants of health — the physical environment, air quality, climate change, water quality, access to healthy foods, obesity, physical activity — and cross a number of public health programs — environmental health, chronic disease, injury prevention.
In 2010, the workgroup will hold a stakeholder session in order get input and develop a prioritized list of actions and activities for the next several years.
Please stay tuned for more developments as the year progresses. If you would like to become involved in this vital workgroup, please contact either of our Co-Chairs (see info in Red links box at right.)
