  • Report on the State of Public Health in Canada 2008 - The Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) is required to report annually on the state of public health in Canada. The 2008 report is the first since the Public Health Agency of Canada became a legal entity in 2006.   • World health statistics 2008 - World Health Statistics 2008 presents the most recent available health statistics for WHO’s 193 Member States. This fourth edition includes 10 highlights of health statistics as well as data on an expanded set of over 70 key health indicators. The indicators were selected on the basis of their relevance to global health monitoring and considerations of data availability, accuracy and comparability among Member States.   • The Interim Statement of the Commission on Social Determinants of Health 2007 — "Achieving Health Equity: From root causes to fair outcomes" — World Health Organization

  • Mandatory Health Program and Service Guidelines: The Ministry is currently reviewing the Mandatory Health Programs and Services Guidelines (MHPSG) as part of an overall strategy to rebuild public health capacity within the province. The most recent version of the MHPSG was released in 1997.

    The review process is being guided by a Program Standards Technical Review Committee (TRC), consisting of stakeholders, and staff from the Ministries of Health and Long-Term Care, Health Promotion and Children and Youth Services. The Committee through its co-chairs advises the Chief Medical Officer of Health on the development of the new program standards. The review process is a collaborative endeavour between the three ministries.

  • Disparity Reducing Advances (DRA) Project: Laying the Groundwork for a Movement to Reduce Health Disparities [PDF], Prevention Institute Report II, April 2007
    What will it take to accelerate the movement to eliminate and reduce disparities in health?  How can the field coalesce, create a roadmap and implement a cohesive, national strategy?  This report attempts to provide answers to these and other questions for practitioners, researchers and advocates working to close the health gap.  This is the second report in a series written for the Institute for Alternative Futures. It builds on a body of work which explores root factors, community and behavioral factors and health care inequities underlying disparities in health.

  • Final Report of the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Special Task Force on Public Health: the F/P/T Special Task Force on Public Health has recommended a two-pronged approach through the creation of a Pan-Canadian Public Health Network and, in parallel, the development and implementation of principles for an Agreement on Mutual Aid During an Emergency, to build on and strengthen existing public health capacity and resources.

  • The intersectoral Pan-Canadian Healthy Living Strategy was approved by the ministers at the Federal/Provincial/Territorial (F/P/T) Ministers of Health meeting in Toronto on October 23 and 24, 2005.

  • Make Your VOICE Count! is a new, on-line guide to collaborative health policy development. A culmination of the activities and learnings of the VOICE in health policy project, the website includes innovative tools and resources that have been developed to increase the capacity of Voluntary Organizations Working in Health (VOWH) and government, to influence policy development. Highlights include an adaptable policy training workshop, reading rooms, planning tools, a library, and more.

  • Health Promotion 101 (HP-101) - a newly developed online course targeted at health professionals. It is free, and modular. Practitioners can go through each of the 9 sections sequentially at their own pace. It was developed collaborativelly among our 22 member organizations with funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. People come to work in health promotion through many and varied paths, and most report a need for additional professional development. This course will help people familiarize themselves with essential health promotion concepts and, in so doing, will help raise the profile of health promotion in Ontario.
